Keith Fox with KS1 pupils in the school library

Welcome from the Headteacher, Keith Fox

St John’s Walworth is a Voluntary Aided Church of England Primary School within the diocese of Southwark and Southwark Education Authority, now part of SouthwarK Childrens' Services. There are 7 year groups from Reception (4/5 year olds) to Year 6 (10/11 year olds). The school was built in 1865 and has played a vital role in the education of children in Walworth since this time. Major re-modelling was completed in May 2004.

We expect school and home to work together for the benefit of all learners, and ask that parents and carers support school events whether by attending special assemblies and meetings, or by volunteering to support the many activities which we undertake.

Our aim is to have an atmosphere of trust and happiness where your child will feel well cared for and secure.   We do this by educating the 'whole' child – that is: physically, mentally and spiritually, developing attitudes and behaviours in the children which create a caring environment where all can develop to their full potential and become responsible citizens in line with the teachings of the Christian church

The school has very close ties with St John’s Church.  The Vicar, Father John Walker, is Chair of Governors.  On alternate weeks all juniors celebrate a School Mass. Learners may be confirmed at the annual service in the church should parents/carers wish. On Tuesdays the whole school has an assembly and collective worship in the Church.

Every day there are assemblies and an act of collective worship for Juniors and Infants.  Class and teacher assemblies take place, and each week a celebration of children’s achievements is held. The school holds services in the church several times a year including Easter, Harvest, Christmas, a Leaver’s Service in July and other religious and commemorative events.   Parents and carers are welcome to join us for these. In addition pupils take part in prayers in class before lunch and at the end of the day.

We have recently achieved Healthy School status and have been awarded Investors in People status. In January 2008 we were awarded a Leading Aspect Award for our work delivering the every Child Matters outcomes through Community Involvement. We are also working with London South Bank University to promote excellence in the training of teachers, and work closely with other schools in the Walworth CLAN (Community, Learning and Achievement Network).
